Five couples – three human, one fairy, and one mythical – find their relationships sorely tested, intimately probed and indecently exposed when a troupe of amateur theatricals bumble into the forest to rehearse a play.

A Quintessential Afternoon Tea

Treat yourself and loved ones to our quintessential afternoon tea. You’ll enjoy a selection of homemade delicious cakes and savouries created by our talented Chefs, accompanied by a range of teas and coffees.

Afternoon tea is served in a heritage function room in our magnificent house. Tickets for afternoon tea also include access to our beautiful private gardens, so you will be able to enjoy a walk in the grounds and gardens after your afternoon tea.

Best of British Car Show

Motor into the Platinum Jubilee Weekend with the Best of British Car Show at Ashridge House!

Join us on Saturday 4th June for a patriotic day of quintessentially British cars of all ages, music and good food, plus a live stream of the royal activities on the big screen. Street vendors will be on site offering a wide variety of delicious food and drink, so this event isn't just a treat for the eyes and ears, but the taste buds too!

The event opens to the public at 11am and closes at 4pm. There is no specific entry time so you're free to attend at your leisure. All that is required is a valid ticket.

Dogs on leads welcome.

Jubilee Dinner & Party

Join us for a patriotic party at Ashridge House!

Celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee with a 2-course dinner followed by an open-air party in the courtyard! As a former royal residence, Ashridge House is the perfect setting to toast this historic occasion, and you'll do so in style by dining in a spectacular heritage room with a decadent menu carefully curated by our Head Chef, Paul Patterson. Then party the night away from 9pm until late with a band and bar in the courtyard. Dance under the stars and raise a class to Her Majesty The Queen!

Tickets are available for dinner and party, or party only.

The Giant Jubilee Picnic

Bring a picnic and be part of history at Ashridge House on Sunday 5th June!

To celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's incredible 70-year reign, Ashridge House is inviting you to feast in the grounds of this former royal residence. You'll also be able to meet Tudor kings and queens, play historic royal games, and dance around the May pole! As if that's not enough, your day will also be accompanied by a band and a live stream of the royal jubilee activities on the big screen!

Whilst you are welcome to bring your own picnic, there will also be a variety of vendors serving a delicious range of food and drink so there's plenty to get your teeth into!

National Garden Scheme Opening & Plant Fair

Step into the historic gardens at Ashridge House this June for our annual National Garden Scheme’s Opening and Plant Fair. Take a stroll through the market and pick yourself up a seasonal beauty from a wide variety of plant and sundry stalls.

Your ticket for the National Garden Scheme (NGS) Opening not only gives you access to the Plant Fair, but also 190 acres of grounds at Ashridge House. We welcome you to our Grade II* registered Repton designed gardens, where you can meander through the Italian Gardens, bask in the scents of the Rosary, and explore the informal arboretum. With all entrance fees going to the NGS, by attending you’ll be supporting the charity’s numerous beneficiaries. Their core beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

There will be a free 20-minute ‘Introduction to the Garden’ tour at 11am & 2pm daily – please meet on the terrace at the back of the house.

Bring a blanket or camping chair and get comfy! Gates open at 6.30pm, picnics are available to purchase in advance and there will be a pop-up bar from which to purchase drinks. Films will start at sunset (9.30-45pm), duration will depend on the length of the film. There’s also the option to book accommodation so that you can make a full night of it!

As the light falls, the movie magic begins, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

The Tempest

A spellbinding open air production of William Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' set on the open air stage at Ashridge House. A fun favourite for all the family with its cast of colourful characters, original musical score, madcap romps, high comedy and tender love.


Shakespeare's late, great gem, widely believed to be the last full play that he wrote alone, examines the power of true love, our capacity for vengeance and what it takes to forgive. The play that has mesmerised and moved audiences for over 400 years is just as relevant and powerful today.


Directors Michael Corbidge and Victoria Williams say "with some of Shakespeare's most memorable speeches and packed with famous characters - from the elemental and Caliban and Ariel, to the comic clowns, Trinculo and Stephano, and the enchanting force that unites them all: the great wizard, Prospero".


'The Tempest' is a truly magical and enchanting play with something for all to enjoy; it certainly makes for an evening not to be missed.

Shakespeare’s timeless comic masterpiece explores every colour in the spectrum of love, from arranged marriage to elopement, from infatuation to hatred, from chivalric devotion to raw sex. Add to this bawdy mix a heady brew of confusion, magic and mischief, and you have the most perfectly frothy comedy for a moonlit summer evening.


Running time (approx): 2hrs 20mins (including 20 minute interval)

About the company

The award-winning outdoor theatre company, Illyria, is celebrating its 30th birthday. They are restaging their fantastic production of A Midsummer Night's Dream to mark this incredible milestone!

Do you have a special someone you want to impress this Valentines?

What better way than to treat them to a romantic four course dinner for two with a choice of complimentary drink on arrival. Enter our historic house and feast on a rich and romantic menu, including:

  • Appetiser: celeriac cappuccino
  • Starter: Coupled with a Snow crab and crevette cocktail
  • Mains: prime fillet of beef, braised beef croquette, shallot puree, English kale OR twice baked wookey hole cheese souffle
  • Dessert: chocolate and pistachio, wild berries and raspberry sorbet.
